This year our TY classes are called Tabei, Tereshkova and Cornaro after the above women. Junko Tabei ( top left) was the first woman to climb Mount Everest. She was born in Japan in September 22, 1939. She conquered Everest in early 1975.
Valentina Tereshkova (top right) was the first woman to go to space. She was a soviet cosmonaut and an engineer. She went to space in 1963 and since then has become a feminist icon.
Elena Cornaro Piscopia (bottom) was the first woman to be officially award a university degree. She was born in Italy and studied at the University of Padua. She graduated in 1678 with a Doctorate in Philosophy. After her death the Padua University put up a statue in her memory.
